January/February 2012
THE CREATIVE PERSON RESIDES IN ALL OF US
BY ERIC SMITH "I
f the creative person feels good about who they are and what they are doing, they are unstoppable. When
they are in a peak emotional state of mind, they are confi dent, produc- tive, proactive, energetic, successful
and just plain happy!" I love that quote. T e creative person resides in all of us; whether
you're an artist (which I am not), a gallery owner, consultant, framer, publisher or printer, being in the art business labels you "creative." Right? I better add "editor" and "writer" to that list of creatives, too. Be-
cause I know ABN Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Wood was in a peak emo- tional state of mind when she put this issue together, starting with our cover story on the 10 most inspiring cities for artists (p. 34). From big cities to small towns, east coast to west and beach views to mountain hideaways, we asked and hundreds of you responded to let us know the places that inspire you most. (I plan to hit at least three of these artistic cities in 2012.) "Inspiration" is a common topic among artists, as evidenced by
several of the other stories in this issue, including Litsa Spanos' in- novative A to Z list of tips on how to sell your art (p. 42), Elliot Kotek's profi le of fi ve sustainable art pioneers (p. 46), Debbie van de Ven's sug- gestions for how to make 2012 your best year yet (p. 26) and Rebecca Pahle's picks for 10 must-follow Tweeters (p. 30). Elsewhere in this jam-packed issue, you'll read about the innova-
tive programs set up by fi nancial giants CITI Bank and GE Capital for artists and art lovers (p. 18) and hear from a handful of thriving gallerists who are sharing their secrets for success (p. 54). Plus, we're going inside the curious mind of legendary pop surrealist Mark Ryden (p. 64). Talk about an action-packed edition to kick off the new year! And the quote? It comes from Karen Kohtz, a SOLO artist exhibit-
ing at International Artexpo New York in March. Karen is also an art- ist advocate and spokesperson, and I invite you all to hear her speak about "Emotional Conditioning"—a passionate topic for her—in the Education Center, when Artexpo comes to Manhattan's Pier 92 from March 22nd through 25th. (Check out the preview of some of this year's exhibiting artists on page 58, and a more in-depth interview with exhibitor Daria Bagrintseva on page 22). ABN
