ABN WHO'S WHO AT ARTEXPO MIAMI + MIAMI SOLO A SNEAK PEEK AT THE WORLD'S LARGEST FINE ART TRADE SHOW'S MIAMI EDITION ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA www.anna-art.com Art, for Anna Razu- movskaya, is an expres- sion of emotion. And to transfer that emotion to the canvas, the artist ex- plains, requires purity of purpose. "You are just drawing and that is all. [You are] simply not thinking of anything defi nite. T e moment you start thinking, that's it—unnecessary stroke, unnecessary detail." T e result of Razumovskaya's focused dedication to what she calls the "romanticism" of her artwork is a style that is representational with elements of the abstract, subdued in tone yet inter- spersed with areas of brightness. OTOK BEN-HVAR www.fi recrackerart.com More than just a painter, Otok Ben-Hvar is somewhat of a living piece of performance art all by him- self. At various points throughout his life he has been a dancer, skater, paratrooper and globe- trotting humanitarian; Ben-Hvar has al- 44 ways been a staunch patriot, something that is easily seen through his series of Firecracker Art. As the country's fi rst and only fi recracker artist, Ben-Hvar combines fi recrackers, gunpowder and pyrotechnic propellants to create a truly unique way of applying paint to canvas. JANET BOTHNE www.janetbothne.com For this Los Angeles- based art- ist, intense colors are "a natural anti- depressant," which Bothne shares with the world through her fear- less, vibrant abstract paintings. Color is not a means to an end in Bothne's art but the goal in and of itself, an antidote to the way society embraces so-called "sophisticated" muted tones as a way to blend in. "I choose to give in to my inner six-year-old who never relearned what colors I should like," Bothne says of her art. "I still play with what gives me joy in the simple seeing." LOUISE CUTLER STUDIO www.louiscutlerstudio.com T e fi ne art of gilding is the ancient process of af- fi xing tissue- thin sheets of precious or common metals to a carefully prepared surface, using a special adhesive size to create a lustrous metallic fi nish. Louise Cutler chose to use gilding in her painting aſt er a visit to the Louvre in Paris, where she marveled at the religious art of the Italian Renaissance. She decided to use metal leaf in her own work to enhance and highlight the illusion of simplistic grandeur, and now works with several types of metal leaf—21- and 23 karat gold, white gold, copper and variegated metal leaf. "I fear that someday this type of beauty and elegance will no longer exist—even in our minds—if we do not embrace and preserve it," says Cutler. "I believe we can combine the past and present in a way that will create har- mony, and paintings that are visually pleasing to the viewer." ANDREA DASHA REICH www.andreadashareich.com Born in Prague, Andrea Dasha Reich was educated in the arts in Jerusalem before moving to New York City and then, later, Sarasota, Florida. She is the model of an international artist, and yet her work pulls not from any distinct combination of cultures. Rather, Reich works in the abstract, layering epoxy resin in a way that references the bright- ness and complexity of the world around us. Explains the artist, "I like people to WINTER 2012
